What is print imposition?

Imposition is the arrangement of pages on a press sheet so that, after printing, cutting, and folding, the pages appear in the correct order and orientation. The up count tells you how many copies of a page print on one sheet pass.

What is bleed in printing?

Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the trim edge of a page. It ensures no unprinted white border appears if the cut is slightly off. Standard bleed is 0.125 in (3.175 mm) on each edge.

The gutter is the space between adjacent pages on the sheet. It allows for the saw kerf when cutting and prevents artwork from one page bleeding into the next. Typically 0.125–0.25 in (3–6 mm).

Why does the calculator floor the result instead of rounding?

You can only fit whole pages on a sheet. Partial pages cannot be printed without running off the sheet edge, so the calculator always floors (truncates) the columns and rows to the nearest whole number.

Does this account for gripper and tail margins?

No. Enter the usable sheet area after subtracting press-specific gripper, tail, side-guide, color-bar and other non-printing margins. Confirm those allowances with the press operator.

Can I use millimeters?

Yes. Select mm from the unit toggle. All inputs switch to millimeters and the calculation stays consistent. Common standard: bleed 3 mm, gutter 4–6 mm.

Rotating the sheet 90° sometimes yields a higher up count. The calculator uses whichever orientation is better.
