Why must booklet pages be divisible by 4?

Saddle-stitch booklets are made by folding a sheet of paper in half. Each folded sheet produces exactly 4 pages (front and back of two leaves). If the total page count is not a multiple of 4, the last sheet is incomplete and must be padded with blank pages to fold and bind correctly.

What is saddle stitching?

Saddle stitching is a binding method where folded sheets are nested inside one another and stapled through the spine. It is the most common binding for booklets, brochures, catalogs, and programs under about 64 pages.

Does this include the cover?

Enter your total desired page count including the cover. A standard booklet has a front cover (page 1), inside front cover (page 2), inside back cover (page N−1), and back cover (page N) — these count toward the total that must be divisible by 4.

What if I want no blank pages?

Is there a maximum page count for saddle stitching?

Most commercial printers recommend saddle-stitched booklets up to about 64 pages (16 sheets). Beyond that, the spine becomes too thick for staples and perfect binding or wire-o binding is preferred.
