Occupant Load Calculator
Enter floor area and a space function to calculate occupant load, capacity-width components, and an exit-count planning checkpoint.
Use the Occupant Load Calculator
Space Parameters
Planning scenario only. Exit eligibility and distribution must be verified under IBC Sections 1005 and 1006.
Results
Enter space parameters and click Calculate.
Maximum Occupant Load
occupants (round up per IBC 1004.1)
Floor Area
Load Factor
Capacity Width Components
Level component per selected exit (0.2 in/occ)
Stair component per selected exit (0.3 in/occ)
Capacity arithmetic is not a compliant-width determination. A 32 in clear door minimum and a commonly applicable 44 in stair minimum (sometimes 36 in for occupant loads below 50) are separate checks with exceptions.
Exit-count planning checkpoint
Code basis: Selected 2021 IBC Table 1004.5 factors; capacity factors and exit planning reference IBC Sections 1005 and 1006. Verify the adopted edition, local amendments, gross/net classification, mixed uses, accessibility, travel distance, common path, sprinkler conditions, and exit distribution.

Summary
Enter floor area and a space function to calculate occupant load, capacity-width components, and an exit-count planning checkpoint.
How it works
- Select the occupancy function type (e.g., assembly, business, mercantile).
- Choose whether your area measurement is gross or net floor area.
- Enter the floor area in square feet.
- The calculator divides area by the code-prescribed load factor to get occupant load.
- Review the calculated capacity-width components and the separate code-review warnings.
Use cases
- Determine occupant load during building permit applications.
- Screen tenant-improvement plans before a project-specific code review.
- Estimate egress-capacity width components for early design.
- Cross-check occupant loads for fire safety planning.
- Assist architects and code consultants with IBC compliance.
- Estimate capacity for assembly or event spaces.
