Summary

Enter patient weight and clinical parameters to get recommended tidal volume, respiratory rate, minute ventilation, and I:E ratio for mechanical ventilation.

How it works

  1. Enter the patient's sex and height to calculate ideal body weight (IBW) using the Devine formula.
  2. Select a target tidal volume range (6, 7, or 8 mL/kg IBW) based on lung-protective strategy.
  3. Enter the target minute ventilation (typically 6–10 L/min) or let the tool estimate from normal values.
  4. Set inspiratory time and total breath cycle time to derive the I:E ratio.
  5. Click Calculate to see tidal volume, respiratory rate, minute ventilation, and I:E ratio.
  6. Adjust inputs and recalculate until settings match clinical goals.

Use cases

  • Biomedical engineers verifying ventilator parameter logic during device testing.
  • Respiratory therapists double-checking initial ventilator setup for adult patients.
  • Medical educators teaching lung-protective ventilation strategies.
  • Students learning mechanical ventilation calculations in critical care curricula.
  • Clinical simulation trainers generating realistic scenario parameters.
  • Biomedical technicians validating alarm threshold settings on ventilator hardware.
  • Researchers modeling ventilation scenarios for comparative studies.
  • ICU nurses cross-checking ordered settings before applying to the patient circuit.
