What is roof pitch and how do I measure it?

Roof pitch is the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, expressed as X/12 (e.g., 6/12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance). You can measure it with a level and ruler on an existing roof, or find it on architectural plans.

Why is roof area larger than the floor footprint?

A sloped surface is physically longer than its horizontal projection. A 6/12 pitch roof, for example, has a pitch multiplier of about 1.118, so the surface area is roughly 12% larger than the footprint beneath it.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square equals 100 square feet. Contractors and material suppliers typically sell shingles and underlayment by the square, so knowing how many squares you need simplifies ordering.

Why add a 10% waste factor?

Cutting shingles around valleys, ridges, hips, and eaves generates offcuts. A 10% overage is the industry-standard buffer for most standard roofs. Complex roofs with many dormers or valleys may need 15–20%.

Does this include overhangs?

The calculator uses the footprint you enter. If your roof has overhangs, add the overhang depth to both the length and width before calculating to include that area in the total.

What is the difference between gable and hip roofs?

A gable roof has two sloped faces and two vertical triangular end walls (gables). A hip roof has four sloped faces that all meet at a ridge or peak — no vertical end walls. A shed roof is a single flat slope.
