Summary
Enter your roof footprint dimensions and pitch to get the true surface area for accurate roofing material estimates.
How it works
- Enter the length and width of the building footprint (the ground-level rectangle the roof covers).
- Select the roof type: gable (two equal slopes), hip (four slopes), or shed (single slope).
- Enter the roof pitch as rise-over-run (e.g. 6/12 means 6 inches rise per 12 inches run).
- The calculator applies the pitch multiplier — the ratio of sloped length to horizontal run — to find the true surface area.
- Results show total roof area in square feet and squares (1 square = 100 sq ft), plus a 10% waste factor estimate.
Use cases
- Estimate shingles, metal panels, or tiles needed before ordering materials.
- Get a quick square count to request contractor quotes.
- Check whether a DIY roofing project is within budget.
- Convert footprint blueprints to actual roof surface for permit applications.
- Compare material costs across different roof pitches during design.
- Verify a contractor's material estimate for accuracy.
