What are the calendar quarters?

Q1 is January 1 – March 31 (90 days, 91 in a leap year), Q2 is April 1 – June 30 (91 days), Q3 is July 1 – September 30 (92 days) and Q4 is October 1 – December 31 (92 days).

What quarter is October in?

October is in calendar Q4. For the US federal government, whose fiscal year starts October 1, October is in Q1 of the next fiscal year: October 10, 2026 is Q1 of FY2027.

How are fiscal years named?

Most organisations, including the US federal government, name a fiscal year after the calendar year in which it ends, so FY2027 runs from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. Some, such as the Japanese government, name it after the year in which it starts. A two-year label such as "FY 2026–27" avoids the ambiguity.

How do I calculate the fiscal quarter by hand?

Count the months from the fiscal year start: offset = (month − start month + 12) mod 12, then quarter = floor(offset ÷ 3) + 1. With an April start, February has offset (2 − 4 + 12) mod 12 = 10, so it is in Q4.

How many days are left in the quarter?

Subtract the day number of the date within its quarter from the quarter length. October 10 is day 10 of Q4, which has 92 days, so 82 days remain after it and the next quarter starts on January 1.

Are all quarters the same length?

No. Calendar quarters have 90 or 91, 91, 92 and 92 days. Some retailers use 52/53-week fiscal calendars with 13-week (4-4-5) quarters instead; this tool uses month-based quarters.

What is the half-year (H1/H2)?

H1 is the first two quarters of the fiscal year and H2 the last two. For a calendar year, H1 is January–June and H2 July–December.

How the quarter is calculated

Month offset from the fiscal year start S: offset = (month − S + 12) mod 12.
Quarter = floor(offset ÷ 3) + 1. Each quarter is three whole months, starting on the 1st of month S + 3 × (quarter − 1).
Day of quarter = days since the quarter start + 1; days left = quarter length − day of quarter.
ISO week follows ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday and week 1 contains the year's first Thursday.

Example: October 10, 2026 with an October fiscal year start has offset (10 − 10 + 12) mod 12 = 0, so it is Q1 of FY2027 (October 1 – December 31, 2026, 92 days). It is day 10 of the quarter with 82 days left, calendar Q4 2026 and ISO week 2026-W41.

Example: February 15, 2026 with an April start has offset (2 − 4 + 12) mod 12 = 10, so it is Q4 (January 1 – March 31, 2026) of the fiscal year April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026, called FY2026 by ending year or FY2025 by starting year.
