Why can't this tool produce a real HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is based on the HEVC/H.265 video codec, which is covered by software patents. Apple licenses the codec for iOS and macOS, but web browsers do not include a HEIC encoder. No browser-based tool can generate a standards-compliant HEIC file without this codec.

What is the best way to get a real HEIC file?

On macOS 13+, open the PNG in Preview, then use File → Export and choose HEIC. On iPhone or iPad, photos shot with the camera are already saved as HEIC. You can also use tools like ImageMagick (with HEIC support compiled in) or Adobe Photoshop on a desktop.

Is JPEG a good substitute for HEIC?

For most purposes, yes. A JPEG at quality 85 is visually near-lossless for photographs and is typically 50–70% smaller than the equivalent PNG. HEIC can achieve similar quality at roughly half the JPEG file size, but that difference only matters in storage-constrained scenarios.

Are my images uploaded to a server?
