What thickness should I use for each coat?

A scratch (base) coat is typically 3/8" (9–10 mm). A brown coat is another 3/8" (9–10 mm). A finish (skim) coat is thinner at 1/8" (3 mm). For a single render coat on masonry, 1/2" (12–13 mm) is common. Always confirm with your product data sheet.

What does "coverage per bag" mean?

Coverage per bag tells you how many square feet (or square metres) a single bag of plaster will cover at the specified coat thickness. The calculator derives this automatically from bag weight, dry density, and yield, and uses it to compute the bag count.

Why add a waste allowance?

Plaster is lost during mixing (wet waste), material that falls off the wall, over-application on uneven surfaces, and unused mix that sets before use. A 10–15% allowance is typical for smooth walls; use 20% for rough or uneven substrates.

How does the calculator handle multiple coats?

Each coat is calculated separately using its own thickness, then the volumes are summed. This ensures accurate totals even when coats differ in thickness — for example, a thick scratch coat followed by a thin skim coat.

Can I subtract door and window openings?

Yes. Enter the total area of all openings to be deducted in the "Deduct openings" field. The calculator subtracts this from the gross surface area before computing volume and bags.

What bag size does the calculator use?

You can choose from common bag sizes: 50 lb (23 kg), 25 kg (55 lb), or enter a custom yield. The default assumes a standard pre-mixed plaster bag with a yield of approximately 0.5 ft³ per 50 lb bag at a mixed density of about 100 lb/ft³.
