Summary

Calculate the volume and weight of mortar needed for bricklaying or blockwork based on wall area, unit dimensions, and joint thickness.

How it works

  1. Choose Imperial (feet/inches) or Metric (meters/mm) units.
  2. Enter the wall length and height.
  3. Input the brick or block dimensions: length, height, and depth.
  4. Set the mortar joint thickness (commonly 3/8 in or 10 mm for brick, 3/8–1/2 in for block).
  5. Select a mix ratio (1:3, 1:4, or 1:6 cement:sand) and a waste allowance.
  6. Click Calculate to see mortar volume, weight, and bag count.

Use cases

  • Estimating mortar quantities before ordering materials for a brick wall.
  • Planning a block foundation or retaining wall project.
  • Comparing mortar needs for different joint thicknesses.
  • Calculating cement and sand quantities for site-mixed mortar.
  • Budgeting pre-bagged mortar purchases for a DIY patio wall.
  • Estimating mortar for a garden wall or raised planter.
  • Cross-checking a contractor's material estimate.
  • Determining bag counts when ordering from a builders' merchant.
