How is sand volume calculated?

Volume = Length × Width × Depth for rectangular areas, or π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × Depth for circular areas. All dimensions must be converted to the same unit before multiplying.

How is sand weight calculated?

Weight = Volume × Density. Dry sand density is typically 1,440–1,680 kg/m³ (90–105 lb/ft³). The exact density varies by sand type and moisture content; this calculator uses standard industry averages for each type.

How many tons of sand do I need?

Divide the total weight in pounds by 2,000 for short tons. For example, 6,000 lb ÷ 2,000 = 3 short tons. Metric tons are kilograms divided by 1,000.

What depth of sand should I use?

For sandboxes and play areas, 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) is common. For paving bases, 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of bedding sand is standard. For mortar mixes, sand volume is determined by the mix ratio, not a layer depth.

Why should I add a waste factor?

Sand compacts under load and some is always lost during spreading. Adding 5–10% to your calculated amount ensures you will not run short mid-project, especially for large areas.

Does sand type affect the calculation?

Yes. Fine play sand is lighter (~1,440 kg/m³) while coarse masonry sand is denser (~1,680 kg/m³). Selecting the correct type gives a more accurate weight and cost estimate.
