How is total fuel used calculated?

All inputs are converted to metric internally. MPG is converted to L/100 km using the formula 235.215 ÷ MPG. Fuel used in liters = (distance in km × L per 100 km) ÷ 100. The result is then displayed in both liters and US gallons (1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters).

How is cost per passenger calculated?

Total fuel cost is divided equally among all passengers you enter. If one person is driving and carries three passengers, enter 4 to split the cost among all four people in the vehicle.

What is the difference between MPG, L/100 km, and km per liter?

MPG (miles per gallon) is the US standard — higher is better. L/100 km (liters per 100 kilometers) is the European metric standard — lower is better. Km per liter is common in Asia and Latin America — higher is better. The calculator converts all three to L/100 km before computing.

Does this tool work for diesel, electric, or hybrid vehicles?

This tool calculates fuel cost for any liquid fuel (gasoline, diesel, E85, etc.) as long as you enter the correct fuel efficiency and price. For electric vehicles, use the L/100 km field as a proxy for kWh/100 km and enter the cost per kWh as your fuel price.
