What is Earned Value (EV)?

Earned Value is the budgeted amount for work actually completed. It equals BAC multiplied by the fraction of work done (EV = BAC × %complete / 100). It measures how much value the project has produced relative to the plan.

What does a CPI less than 1 mean?

A Cost Performance Index (CPI) below 1.0 means you are spending more than planned for the work delivered — the project is over budget. CPI = EV / AC; a CPI of 0.90 means every dollar spent returns only 90 cents of value.

How is EAC calculated?

Estimate at Completion (EAC) = BAC / CPI. This is the most common forecast assuming future work continues at the current cost efficiency. Other formulas exist but this is the default in most project management standards.

What is TCPI and why does it matter?

To-Complete Performance Index (TCPI) = (BAC - EV) / (BAC - AC). It is the cost efficiency that must be achieved on all remaining work to finish within the original budget. A TCPI above 1.1 is generally considered unrealistic.

Can I use this for agile projects?

Yes. Treat story points or feature completion percentage as the percent complete input. Planned Value is your sprint budget consumed to date, and Actual Cost is what you actually spent. EVM applies to any project type.
