How is travel distance measured?

Travel distance is measured along the natural path of travel from the most remote occupiable point in a room or space to the center of the nearest exit door, following corridors and aisles without passing through intervening rooms.

Does a partial sprinkler system change the limits?

No. The increased travel distance allowed under IBC Table 1017.2 requires a fully supervised automatic sprinkler system installed throughout the entire building per NFPA 13. Partial systems do not qualify.

What about H occupancies?

High-hazard (H) occupancies have significantly reduced travel distances regardless of sprinklers due to the severity of materials stored. H-1 through H-5 each have separate limits; this calculator uses the most restrictive general H limit (H-2/H-3 = 75 ft sprinklered).

Does common path of travel factor in here?

This tool calculates total travel distance to an exit. Common path of travel (the portion of travel shared before reaching two independent paths) is a separate, shorter limit checked elsewhere in the egress analysis.
