What is the difference between this and a regular tip calculator?

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal since tax is not part of the service you received. This calculator applies the tip to the subtotal only. However, tipping on the post-tax total is also common and results in a marginally higher tip.

How does the custom split work?

When you enable Custom Split, you can enter an amount for each person representing their share of the pre-tax subtotal. The tip and tax are then added proportionally. The amounts must add up to the bill subtotal — the calculator will warn you if they do not.

What if the custom amounts do not add up exactly due to rounding?

The calculator accepts amounts that are within a few cents of the subtotal. If the amounts differ significantly, the tool displays a warning and falls back to an even split. Adjust the individual amounts until the total matches.

What is a standard tip percentage in the United States?
