Portion Size Calculator

Party food: plan about ½ lb raw boneless meat, ½ lb potatoes or ¼ cup dry rice, ¼ lb vegetables and 1½ rolls per adult. Healthy plate: half vegetables and fruit, a quarter protein (3 oz, about a palm), a quarter grains (½–1 cup, about a fist). At 2,000 kcal USDA patterns give 2½ cups vegetables, 2 cups fruit, 6 oz grains, 5½ oz protein and 3 cups dairy a day.

Summary

This portion size calculator answers the three questions people usually mean by "portion size". For a party, dinner or catering job it multiplies standard per-person amounts (for example ½ lb raw boneless meat, ¼ cup dry rice, 1 oz salad greens) by your headcount and appetite and gives the total to buy in pounds, kilograms and cups. For healthy eating it divides the USDA Healthy U.S.-Style food pattern for your calorie level into meals and translates each food group into cups, ounces and hand-size equivalents (a fist ≈ 1 cup, a palm ≈ 3 oz of meat), with the protein target of 1.2–1.6 g per kg from the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines. And it scales any recipe from its original servings to the number you need.

How it works

  1. Food per person: enter the number of guests and pick an appetite level (light ×0.8, average ×1, hearty ×1.25). Each total = per-person amount × guests × appetite factor, shown in raw purchase weight.
  2. Healthy portions: choose a daily calorie level and the number of meals. Daily food-group amounts come from the USDA Healthy U.S.-Style pattern; the per-meal amount is the daily amount ÷ meals.
  3. Hand guide: a fist is about 1 cup (vegetables, fruit, cooked grains), a palm without fingers about 3 oz of cooked meat or fish, a cupped hand about 1 oz of nuts, and a thumb about 1 tablespoon.
  4. Protein: enter body weight to get 1.2–1.6 g per kg per day, the range in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030, split across meals.
  5. Recipe scaling: enter the original and desired servings and the ingredients; every amount is multiplied by desired ÷ original servings.

Use cases

  • Work out how much meat, rice, potatoes and salad to buy for a party of 25 or 100.
  • Plan a buffet or catering order with a hearty or light appetite crowd.
  • Find a healthy portion size per meal for a 1,600, 2,000 or 2,400 calorie diet.
  • Estimate portions without a scale using the hand guide.
  • Split a daily protein target into grams per meal.
  • Scale a recipe up for meal prep or down for one or two people.
