What is a pip in forex trading?

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price move in a forex pair. For most pairs it is 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For JPY pairs it is 0.01 (the second decimal place). Some brokers quote a fifth decimal (pipette), but one pip still equals 10 pipettes.

How is pip value calculated?

Pip value = (pip size / exchange rate) × lot size in units. For pairs where USD is the quote currency the formula simplifies to pip size × lot size. For other pairs you divide by the current rate and optionally multiply by the account currency conversion rate.

What is a standard lot versus a mini or micro lot?

A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000 units, and a micro lot is 1,000 units. Each step down reduces pip value by a factor of 10. For EUR/USD at 1.1000 a standard lot pip is $10, a mini lot pip is $1, and a micro lot pip is $0.10.

Why does the pip value change when the exchange rate changes?

Pip value is inversely proportional to the exchange rate for most pairs. As the pair rate rises, each pip represents a smaller fraction of the base currency, lowering pip value. For USD/JPY the relationship is more direct — a higher rate means a lower pip value in USD.

How do I convert pip value to my account currency?

If the quote currency of the pair matches your account currency, no conversion is needed. Otherwise divide (or multiply) the raw pip value by the current exchange rate between the quote currency and your account currency.
