Summary
Enter a map scale ratio and measured distance to get the real-world equivalent, or work backwards to find the scale.
How it works
- Choose a calculation mode: "Map → Real World" or "Find Scale".
- For Map → Real World: enter the scale ratio (e.g. 50000 for 1:50000) and the measured map distance.
- Select the unit for map distance (mm, cm, or inches) and the desired output unit.
- For Find Scale: enter the real-world distance and the corresponding map distance.
- The result updates instantly. Use the Copy button to copy the answer.
Use cases
- Convert a ruler measurement on a paper map to kilometers or miles.
- Determine how many real-world meters one centimeter represents on a topographic map.
- Calculate the correct scale ratio for a custom printed map.
- Plan hiking routes by measuring path length on a trail map.
- Cross-check map scales when using different map editions.
- Estimate driving distances between points on a road atlas.
