Which browsers support AVIF encoding?

AVIF encoding via Canvas is supported in Chrome 93+, Edge 93+, and Opera. Firefox and Safari do not yet support canvas.toBlob with image/avif. If your browser is unsupported, an error message will appear.

What input formats are supported?

JPG and JPEG files are supported as input. The output is always an AVIF file.

What quality setting should I use?

Quality 75–85 is the sweet spot for most photos — visually near-lossless at significantly smaller file sizes than JPG. For high-detail or text-heavy images, 90+ is safer. For thumbnails or previews, 60–70 is acceptable.

Why is the AVIF sometimes larger than the original?

Very low-quality JPGs, simple flat-color images, or very high quality settings can occasionally produce a larger AVIF. Try lowering the quality slider to achieve a smaller output.

Is there a file size limit?

The limit is your browser's available memory, typically several hundred megabytes. Very large images over 30 megapixels may be slow to process on low-end devices.
