Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The entire conversion runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API and a custom JavaScript BMP encoder. Your image file never leaves your device.

Why is the BMP file larger than the original JPG?

BMP files are uncompressed. Each pixel is stored as raw BGR bytes, so a 1000x1000 image becomes roughly 3 MB. JPEG and PNG use compression, which is why those files are much smaller. BMP is chosen when simplicity or compatibility matters more than file size.

What color depth does the output use?

The output uses 24-bit RGB (8 bits per channel, stored in BGR order as required by the BMP specification). This preserves full color fidelity for all images.

Does BMP support transparency?

Standard 24-bit BMP does not support transparency. This tool composites any transparent or semi-transparent pixels onto the background color you select before writing the BMP file.

Which input formats are supported?

JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP are all supported. The browser decodes the source image and the tool re-encodes the pixel data as a BMP.

Is there a file size limit?

The limit is your browser's available memory. Very large images may be slow to process on low-end devices. Images under 4000 x 4000 pixels work reliably in all modern browsers.

Which browsers are supported?

All modern browsers — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 14+. The Canvas API, Blob downloads, and typed arrays used for BMP encoding are universally supported.
