How the Formula Works
The standard weighted grade formula used by most institutions:
Required Final =
(Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight ÷ 100))
÷ (Final Weight ÷ 100)
A result below 0 means your target is already secured. A result above 100 means the target is no longer reachable.
Summary
Enter your current grade, desired final grade, and final exam weight to find the minimum score you need on your final exam.
How it works
- Enter your current course grade as a percentage (e.g. 82).
- Enter the desired final course grade you want to achieve (e.g. 90).
- Enter the weight of the final exam as a percentage of the total course grade (e.g. 30).
- The calculator applies the weighted grade formula to find the required final exam score.
- Results show the minimum score needed and whether it is realistically achievable (under 100%) or not.
Use cases
- Determine whether you can still get an A after a rough semester.
- Plan how hard to study for the final based on your current standing.
- Check if passing the course is possible given your current grade.
- Quickly recalculate when your current grade changes after a late submission.
- Compare scenarios for different target grades in the same course.
- Use for multiple courses at once to prioritize final exam prep.
- Calculate the minimum score needed to pass (e.g., achieve a 60% final grade).
- Show students how each percentage point gained now reduces required final score.
