What is a score differential?

A score differential measures your performance relative to the difficulty of the course. The formula is: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. Most golf apps and scorecards provide this automatically.

How many differentials does WHS use?

WHS uses between 1 and 8 of your lowest differentials depending on how many you have recorded, following a specific lookup table. For example, with 20 differentials it uses the lowest 8; with 5 differentials it uses the lowest 1.

Does WHS use the old 0.96 multiplier?

No. The 0.96 bonus-for-excellence multiplier belonged to the pre-2020 USGA Handicap System and is not part of the WHS Handicap Index calculation. PCC, when applicable, is already included in each Score Differential.

What is the maximum Handicap Index?

Under the World Handicap System, the maximum Handicap Index is 54.0 for all players, regardless of gender. This replaced the previous separate male/female maximums.

Do I need a minimum number of rounds?

You need at least 3 score differentials to receive a Handicap Index under WHS. With fewer than 3 differentials, a handicap cannot be calculated.

Is this calculator official?

This tool applies the published WHS formula for educational and estimation purposes. Official Handicap Indexes are issued by authorized golf associations and clubs that also account for exceptional score reductions and other adjustments.
