What is gas in Ethereum?

Gas is the unit measuring the computational effort required to execute a specific operation on the Ethereum network. Every transaction consumes a certain amount of gas; more complex operations consume more.

Gwei (gigawei) is a denomination of ETH equal to 10⁻⁹ ETH (0.000000001 ETH). Gas prices are expressed in Gwei because the numbers are easier to read — saying "30 Gwei" is cleaner than "0.00000003 ETH".

EIP-1559, active since the London upgrade, changed gas pricing to use a base fee (burned by the network) plus an optional priority fee (tip to validators). The effective gas price = base fee + priority fee.

Why is my gas limit different from gas used?

Gas limit is the maximum gas you authorize for a transaction. The network only charges you for gas actually consumed. Unused gas is refunded. Setting the limit too low causes an "out of gas" failure.

Does this tool fetch live gas prices?

Why does an ERC-20 transfer cost more than an ETH transfer?

An ETH transfer is a simple value transfer costing 21,000 gas. An ERC-20 transfer involves executing the token contract's transfer() function, which requires additional computation — typically around 65,000 gas.
