Summary

Calculate the pre-wash fabric size needed for a desired finished size, or find the shrinkage percentage from before and after measurements.

How it works

  1. Select the calculation mode: Pre-Wash Size or Shrinkage Percentage.
  2. For Pre-Wash Size: enter the desired finished length and width, plus the shrinkage % for each direction.
  3. The formula pre-wash = post-wash / (1 - shrinkage%) gives the required cutting size.
  4. For Shrinkage %: enter the original (pre-wash) and finished (post-wash) measurements.
  5. The formula shrinkage% = (pre - post) / pre * 100 gives the shrinkage rate.
  6. Results update instantly as you type.

Use cases

  • Determine how much fabric to buy and cut to achieve a specific finished garment size.
  • Calculate pre-wash yardage for quilting projects where precision matters.
  • Measure actual shrinkage of a fabric sample before cutting a full run.
  • Compare shrinkage in warp vs. weft directions for woven textiles.
  • Document shrinkage specs for fabric QA in apparel manufacturing.
  • Plan fabric allowances for upholstery or home textile projects.
