What is the difference between warp and weft shrinkage?

Warp (also called length-wise or machine direction) runs along the length of the fabric roll. Weft (cross direction) runs across the width. Most fabrics shrink more in the warp direction. Measuring each separately gives more accurate cut sizes.

What shrinkage percentage should I expect?

Cotton typically shrinks 3–5% in the first wash; denim can shrink up to 10%. Wool and some linens may shrink 5–15% without pre-treatment. Synthetics like polyester usually shrink less than 1%. Always pre-wash a fabric swatch to measure the actual value.

Why do I divide by (1 - shrinkage%) instead of just multiplying?

If fabric shrinks 5%, a 100 cm piece becomes 95 cm. Working backward: to finish at 95 cm you need 95 / 0.95 ≈ 100 cm, not 95 × 1.05 = 99.75 cm. The division gives the exact inverse.

Can I enter the shrinkage as a decimal (e.g. 0.05)?

No — enter it as a percentage value, e.g. 5 for 5%. The calculator divides your input by 100 internally.
