The CMC is the surfactant concentration above which molecules aggregate into micelles. Below the CMC, surface tension decreases as concentration rises; above it, surface tension stays roughly constant because additional surfactant goes into micelles rather than to the interface.

Why does CMC matter in formulation?

Working above the CMC ensures micelles are present to solubilize oils, deliver actives, or stabilize emulsions. Working far above the CMC wastes material without added benefit, so CMC sets the practical lower bound for effective surfactant use.

How does temperature affect CMC?

For ionic surfactants, CMC typically rises slightly with temperature. For nonionic ethoxylated surfactants, CMC can decrease with temperature because hydration of the ethylene oxide head groups weakens. Values in this database are at approximately 25 degrees Celsius.
