What is a class rank percentile?

A percentile indicates the percentage of classmates whose rank is below yours. For example, the 90th percentile means you ranked higher than 90% of your class.

What formula is used?

The standard formula is: Percentile = ((Class Size − Rank) ÷ Class Size) × 100. So if you are ranked 10th in a class of 200, your percentile is ((200 − 10) ÷ 200) × 100 = 95th percentile.

Is rank 1 the best rank?

Yes. Rank 1 (valedictorian) is the top of the class and corresponds to just below the 100th percentile. The calculator assumes rank 1 is the highest-performing student.

Why is my percentile not exactly 100%?

The 100th percentile is mathematically undefined because it would mean scoring higher than everyone including yourself. Rank 1 yields a percentile just below 100% using the standard formula.
