Electrical Box Fill Calculator

Enter conductor sizes, clamps, devices, and fittings to calculate total box fill volume and check NEC 314.16 compliance.

Conductors

Count each current-carrying conductor and neutral separately. Do not count EGCs here.

Equipment Grounding Conductors (EGC)

All EGCs together count as one conductor volume based on the largest EGC.

Clamps, Devices & Fittings

Reference Conductor Size

Clamps, fittings, and devices are sized to the largest conductor in the box. The tool detects this automatically from the conductor table, but you can override it here.

Results

Fill in the form and click Calculate Box Fill to see the required volume.

NEC Table 314.16(B) Quick Reference

Conductor Size Volume per item (in³)
14 AWG2.00
12 AWG2.25
10 AWG2.50
8 AWG3.00
6 AWG5.00
4 AWG7.00
3 AWG8.00
2 AWG9.00

Clamps and support fittings = 1 × volume of largest conductor. Each device yoke = 2 × volume of largest conductor. All EGCs together = 1 × volume of largest EGC.

Summary

Enter conductor sizes, clamps, devices, and fittings to calculate total box fill volume and check NEC 314.16 compliance.

How it works

  1. Select the AWG size for each group of conductors and enter the count.
  2. Add conductor-based allowances: clamp sets, support fittings, and equipment grounding conductors.
  3. Add a device allowance for each yoke/strap (switch, outlet, etc.) mounted in the box.
  4. The calculator multiplies each item by its NEC Table 314.16(B) volume allowance.
  5. Compare the total required volume to your box's listed cubic-inch capacity to check compliance.

Use cases

  • Verify a standard 2×4 switch box has enough room before rough-in.
  • Plan a junction box with multiple splice points to avoid overcrowding.
  • Check compliance when adding a GFCI or smart outlet to an existing box.
  • Size a remodel box when adding conductors to a crowded retrofit location.
  • Teach NEC 314.16 box fill rules in electrical apprenticeship programs.
