How is the recommended TV size range calculated?

It uses the viewing angle a screen subtends at a given distance. A 30-degree angle is a comfortable, SMPTE-style reference and a 40-degree angle is a closer, more immersive THX-style reference; the calculator converts both into a diagonal size using the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Why does resolution change the recommendation?

Resolution sets how many pixels are packed into the screen height. At a fixed distance, a lower-resolution panel needs to be smaller (or viewed from farther away) before individual pixels stop being visible to the eye, based on a 1 arc-minute visual acuity limit.

What if my TV is not a 16:9 aspect ratio?

Nearly all modern TVs use 16:9, which is what this calculator assumes. Ultrawide monitors or projector screens with a different ratio will have a somewhat different width and height for the same diagonal; use the Screen Diagonal Calculator for other ratios.

Should I use the closer or farther end of the recommended range?

Closer (the 40-degree figure) gives a more cinematic, immersive picture, but can feel too large for casual viewing or make fast motion harder to follow. Farther (the 30-degree figure) is the safer, more comfortable default for a shared living room.

Does a bigger TV always need a farther viewing distance?

For a comfortable viewing angle, yes. For pixel sharpness specifically, a bigger 4K TV still resolves fine at a given distance because it has far more pixels than a 1080p TV of the same size, so the size limit before pixels appear is much larger for 4K.
