What time window does SLEDAI-2K cover?

SLEDAI-2K captures features present within the 10 days preceding the assessment. Unlike some other instruments, it counts a descriptor even if it is persistent and unchanged from a previous visit.

What score indicates a flare?

A commonly used definition of a mild-to-moderate flare is an increase in SLEDAI-2K of 3 or more points; a severe flare is defined as a new score of 12 or more, or a new score requiring hospitalisation or cytotoxic/high-dose steroid change. Individual trials may use different cut-offs.

What is the difference between SLEDAI and SLEDAI-2K?

The original SLEDAI (1992) counted rash, alopecia, mucosal ulcers, and pleuritis only if they were new or recurring; SLEDAI-2K (2002, Gladman et al.) scores these four descriptors whether new or persistent, making it more sensitive to ongoing activity. Most current publications use SLEDAI-2K.
