What is the 1.5 sigma shift?

Long-term process data shows that process means tend to drift up to 1.5 standard deviations over time due to tool wear, operator variation, and environmental factors. Six Sigma accounts for this by subtracting 1.5 from the short-term Z score to get the long-term sigma level used in DPMO tables.

Why does 6 sigma equal 3.4 DPMO instead of 0.002?

The 3.4 DPMO figure already includes the 1.5 sigma long-term shift. Without the shift, a perfect 6σ process would have only 0.002 DPMO. The shifted value (6 − 1.5 = 4.5σ short-term capability) gives 3.4 DPMO, which is the industry standard.

DPMO stands for Defects Per Million Opportunities. It measures how many defects occur for every one million chances for a defect to occur. It normalizes defect rates across processes with different numbers of defect opportunities per unit.
