The Rf (retention factor or retardation factor) is the ratio of the distance traveled by a compound to the distance traveled by the solvent front. It is a dimensionless number between 0 and 1 that characterizes how a compound moves in a given chromatography system.

Why must the Rf value be between 0 and 1?

A compound cannot travel farther than the solvent front, so the solute distance is always less than or equal to the solvent front distance. An Rf of 0 means the compound did not move; an Rf of 1 means it traveled with the solvent front.

What factors affect the Rf value?

Rf values depend on the stationary phase material (silica gel, alumina, cellulose), the mobile phase (solvent or solvent mixture), temperature, and the polarity of the compound. Rf values must always be reported alongside these conditions to be meaningful.

Can I add multiple spots and compare them?

How precise should my distance measurements be?
