How is the total fuel load calculated?

Fuel use per lap is multiplied by the number of laps, then reserve fuel is added for the formation lap or pit lane. The safety margin percentage is applied on top of that subtotal to give the final fuel to load.

What safety margin should I use?

Most teams run 5 to 10 percent over the calculated race distance to cover traffic, full-course cautions, and driver fuel-save variance. Longer endurance stints or unpredictable tracks often use 10 to 15 percent.

Why does this tool show a fuel weight?

Fuel adds real weight to the car, and different fuels have different densities. The weight estimate uses a typical density for the selected fuel type so you can factor the load into corner weights and ballast.

Does this tell me how much fuel I am using per lap?

No. This tool assumes you already know your fuel use per lap and calculates the total to load for the race. To work out your consumption rate from lap times and tank readings, use the race fuel consumption calculator instead.

Can I use this for gallons instead of liters?
