What is PSA velocity?

PSA velocity (PSAV) is the rate at which your PSA level changes over time, expressed in ng/mL per year. It is calculated by dividing the change in PSA by the time elapsed between readings.

How many readings do I need?

A minimum of two readings is required. Three or more readings spaced at least 12-18 months apart give a more reliable average velocity.

What PSAV is considered concerning?

A commonly cited threshold is 0.75 ng/mL/year. A PSAV above 2.0 ng/mL/year is considered high concern. These are reference values only — your physician interprets them in the context of your full clinical picture.

Is PSAV the same as PSA doubling time?

No. PSAV measures the absolute rise per year (ng/mL/year). PSA doubling time measures how long it takes PSA to double and is expressed in months. Both are useful but capture different aspects of PSA kinetics.

Does a high PSAV mean I have prostate cancer?

Not necessarily. PSA can rise due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, recent ejaculation, or other factors. PSAV is one data point among many your doctor will consider.
