Summary
Calculate heat exchanger NTU and thermal effectiveness for parallel, counter, and cross-flow configurations using the epsilon-NTU method.
How it works
- Enter the hot and cold fluid capacity rates (mass flow rate × specific heat, in W/K).
- Enter the overall heat transfer coefficient (U) and heat exchanger area (A), or enter NTU directly.
- Select the flow configuration: counter flow, parallel flow, or cross-flow (unmixed).
- The calculator computes NTU = UA / C_min, capacity ratio C* = C_min / C_max, and effectiveness ε.
- Actual heat transfer Q is computed as ε × C_min × (T_hot_in − T_cold_in).
- Outlet temperatures are derived from Q and the respective capacity rates.
Use cases
- Size shell-and-tube heat exchangers in chemical process plants.
- Evaluate radiator or condenser performance in HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Cross-check manufacturer data sheets for plate heat exchangers.
- Estimate outlet temperatures when measuring UA and inlet conditions.
- Compare counter-flow vs. parallel-flow configurations for a given NTU.
- Screen heat recovery units in combined heat and power (CHP) projects.
