What is neutralizing value (NV) and why does it matter?

Neutralizing value (NV), also called calcium carbonate equivalent (CCE), measures how effectively a lime product neutralizes soil acidity compared to pure calcium carbonate (100% NV). Calcitic lime typically has an NV of 90–100%, while dolomitic lime ranges from 95–108% due to its magnesium carbonate content. A higher NV means you need less product to achieve the same pH correction.

What is buffer pH and do I need it?

Buffer pH (also called buffer index) is measured from a soil buffer solution added to your sample. It reflects the soil's reserve acidity — how much lime is needed beyond just raising the water pH. Without buffer pH the calculator uses a simplified estimate based on current vs. target pH. With buffer pH (from a standard SMP or Mehlich buffer test) the estimate is more accurate, especially for high-organic or clayey soils.

Why is my lime recommendation higher than expected?

Soils with high organic matter or heavy clay content have greater buffering capacity — they resist pH changes and require more lime per unit of pH change. The buffer pH value captures this. A large gap between current pH and target pH also directly increases lime requirement.

How long does it take for lime to raise soil pH?

Agricultural lime reacts slowly. Finely ground lime can raise pH within 3–6 months; coarser products may take 1–2 years to fully react. For this reason soil tests are recommended annually after liming, and large corrections are often split across two seasons rather than applied all at once.

What is the maximum lime rate I should apply at once?

Most agronomists recommend a single application maximum of 2–3 tons per acre (4.5–6.7 t/ha) to avoid surface over-liming and nutrient tie-up. If the calculated rate exceeds this, plan to split applications over two or more seasons. The calculator flags this automatically.

What is the difference between calcitic and dolomitic lime?

Calcitic lime is primarily calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and supplies calcium. Dolomitic lime contains both calcium and magnesium carbonate (CaCO3·MgCO3) and supplies magnesium as well as calcium. Choose dolomitic lime if your soil is also magnesium-deficient; otherwise either type corrects pH equally well at equivalent NV.
