What is the difference between kVA and watts?

kVA measures apparent power — the total power drawn from the supply including reactive components. Watts measure real power — the portion actually converted to useful work. They are related by the power factor: W = kVA × 1,000 × PF.

What power factor should I use?

Resistive loads (heaters, incandescent lights) have a power factor of 1.0. Inductive loads like motors typically range from 0.7 to 0.95. If unsure, 0.80 is a common conservative default for mixed commercial loads.

Can I convert watts back to kVA?

Yes — divide watts by 1,000 to get kW, then divide by the power factor: kVA = kW / PF. A separate watts-to-kVA tool is available for that direction.

Why does my generator show kVA instead of watts?

Generators are rated in kVA because the apparent power determines the required conductor and winding size regardless of the load type. The actual watts delivered depend on the load's power factor.
