What is the difference between MPG and L/100km?

MPG (miles per gallon) measures how far you travel per unit of fuel — higher is better. L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) measures how much fuel you consume per unit of distance — lower is better. To convert: L/100km = 235.21 ÷ MPG (US).

The calculation is mathematically exact given your inputs. Real-world accuracy depends on how precisely you measure distance (odometer or GPS) and fuel (pump display). For best results, fill your tank to the same level each time and use the exact pump reading.

What does cost per mile mean?

Cost per mile is the total fuel cost divided by miles driven. For example, at 30 MPG with gas at $3.50/gallon, your fuel cost is $3.50 ÷ 30 = $0.117 per mile. Multiply by your annual mileage to get your yearly fuel bill.

Which gallon does this calculator use?

This tool uses US gallons (3.785 L) for Imperial mode. Metric mode uses liters, which avoids gallon ambiguity entirely. To convert US MPG to UK MPG, multiply by 1.201.
