How accurate is the estimated weight?

For a typical healthy fish the estimate is usually within 10–15% of actual weight. Accuracy depends on body condition — a thin post-spawn fish will weigh less than the formula predicts, while a fat pre-spawn fish may weigh more.

What formula does this use?

The standard fisheries length-weight equation W = a × L^b, where L is total length and W is weight. The coefficients a and b are species-specific constants published by state and federal fisheries agencies and peer-reviewed fisheries journals.

What is total length?

Total length is measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail, with the tail lobes pinched together. This is the standard measurement used for most length-weight coefficients.

Can I use fork length instead?

This calculator uses total length. For species where fork length is more common (some trout, salmon), convert fork length to total length by multiplying by approximately 1.04–1.06 before entering the value.

Why does the same length give different weights for different species?

Fish body shape and density vary greatly by species. A chunky largemouth bass is much heavier than a slender northern pike of the same length because the bass has a larger girth relative to its length.

Where do the coefficients come from?
