Summary
Find out how long it takes to charge your electric vehicle based on battery size, current charge, target charge, and charger power.
How it works
- Subtract the current charge from the target charge and multiply by battery capacity to get the energy deficit in kWh.
- Divide the energy deficit by the charger power (kW) to get the raw charging hours.
- Apply a charging efficiency factor (default 90%) to account for losses, giving the wall-clock time in hours and minutes.
- Multiply the energy drawn by your electricity rate ($/kWh) to estimate the cost of the charge.
Use cases
- Plan a road trip stop by knowing how long you need at a public charger.
- Decide whether overnight Level 1 charging is enough before your morning commute.
- Compare the time savings of installing a Level 2 home charger vs. a standard outlet.
- Estimate electricity cost for a full charge cycle at home.
- Schedule charging during off-peak rate hours to save money.
