Summary

Find out how long it takes to charge your electric vehicle based on battery size, current charge, target charge, and charger power.

How it works

  1. Subtract the current charge from the target charge and multiply by battery capacity to get the energy deficit in kWh.
  2. Divide the energy deficit by the charger power (kW) to get the raw charging hours.
  3. Apply a charging efficiency factor (default 90%) to account for losses, giving the wall-clock time in hours and minutes.
  4. Multiply the energy drawn by your electricity rate ($/kWh) to estimate the cost of the charge.

Use cases

  • Plan a road trip stop by knowing how long you need at a public charger.
  • Decide whether overnight Level 1 charging is enough before your morning commute.
  • Compare the time savings of installing a Level 2 home charger vs. a standard outlet.
  • Estimate electricity cost for a full charge cycle at home.
  • Schedule charging during off-peak rate hours to save money.
