Summary

Enter board width, tail count, dovetail angle, and half-pin size to get precise layout marks for hand-cut dovetail joints.

How it works

  1. Enter your board width in inches or millimeters.
  2. Set the number of tails (the wedge-shaped pieces between pins).
  3. Choose a dovetail angle ratio: 1:5 for softwood, 1:6 or 1:7 for hardwood.
  4. Enter your half-pin size — the narrow pin at each edge, typically 3/8" to 1/2".
  5. The calculator divides the remaining space evenly among tails and full pins, then lists every layout mark from left edge to right.

Use cases

  • Laying out hand-cut through dovetails on drawer boxes.
  • Planning half-blind dovetails for drawer fronts before cutting.
  • Teaching woodworking students the geometry of dovetail spacing.
  • Verifying pencil-and-rule calculations before committing to saw cuts.
