What formula does this calculator use?

It uses the gravity-points method: gravity points = (SG − 1) × 1000. New gravity points = (original points × original volume) / new total volume. Then new SG = (new points / 1000) + 1. This is the standard homebrewing dilution formula.

Does it work with Plato or Brix values?

This calculator uses specific gravity (SG) values like 1.050. To convert from Plato: SG ≈ 1 + (°P / (258.6 − 0.8797 × °P)). For quick estimates, °Brix ≈ °Plato, so the same conversion applies.

Can I use liters instead of gallons?

Yes. Switch the unit toggle to liters. The formula is unit-agnostic as long as both volumes use the same unit.

Why does adding water lower gravity?

Specific gravity measures sugar density relative to water. Adding plain water increases total volume while keeping sugar mass constant, so the sugar concentration — and thus the gravity — drops proportionally.

How accurate is this for high-gravity beers?

Very accurate. The gravity-points formula is linear and does not degrade at higher gravities. The only practical limit is your hydrometer or refractometer reading accuracy.
