Caesium exhibits one stable oxidation state: +1. Its ground-state configuration is [Xe] 6s1 — losing the single 6s valence electron reveals the stable [Xe] noble-gas core. With a first ionization energy of only 375.7 kJ/mol (the lowest of all stable elements), Cs gives up this electron readily. The second ionization energy (2234.4 kJ/mol) is nearly six times higher, making +2 energetically inaccessible in all ordinary conditions. No stable +2 or higher compounds of caesium are known.
