What is Years of Life Lost (YLL)?

YLL is an epidemiology measure of premature mortality. It equals the number of deaths in an age group multiplied by the remaining standard life expectancy at that age. A higher YLL means more life-years are lost to that cause.

How is YLL different from crude death count?

A death count treats all deaths equally regardless of age. YLL weights each death by how many years of life were cut short, so a death at age 10 contributes far more YLL than a death at age 85.
