How does the word counter work?

The tool splits your text on whitespace to count words, counts every character individually, detects sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?) for sentence count, and splits on blank lines for paragraphs.

What reading speed does it use?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute (average adult silent reading speed). Speaking time uses 130 words per minute (average presentation pace).

Does it count spaces as characters?

Yes — the "Characters (with spaces)" stat includes spaces. The "Characters (no spaces)" stat strips all whitespace before counting.

What are the "Top words"?

The top-words list shows the 10 most frequent content words, excluding common stop words like "the", "and", "is". This highlights the key themes in your text.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
