What is the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes?

Determinate (bush) tomatoes grow to a fixed height and set fruit all at once, needing 18-24 inches of spacing. Indeterminate tomatoes keep growing and fruiting all season, needing 24-36 inches between plants. Container varieties are compact cultivars bred for pots and need only 12-18 inches.

How is the plant count calculated?

The calculator divides the bed length by the row spacing (center-to-center distance between rows) to get the number of rows, then divides the bed width by the plant spacing to get plants per row. Total plants = rows x plants per row. Both divisions are rounded down (floor).

Should I use the row spacing or plant spacing for square planting?

For square planting (equal spacing in all directions), set both row spacing and plant spacing to the same value — the tool does this by default when you pick a variety type. Use the custom spacing field to adjust if you need rectangular spacing.

What if my bed is irregularly shaped?

Enter the largest rectangular area that fits within your space. Subtract any corner plants that fall outside the actual growing area from the result.

Can I use this for in-ground rows, not just raised beds?

Yes. Enter your row length as the bed length and total row width as the bed width. The result gives plants per row and total rows across the width.
