Sound Transmission Class Calculator
Enter octave-band transmission loss values to compute an STC rating, or look up minimum STC requirements by building type and space separation.

Summary
Enter octave-band transmission loss values to compute an STC rating, or look up minimum STC requirements by building type and space separation.
How it works
- Enter measured or estimated transmission loss (TL) values in dB for each of the 16 one-third octave bands (125 Hz to 4000 Hz).
- Click "Calculate STC" to run the ASTM E413 contour-fitting algorithm.
- The calculator slides the standard STC contour up until the total deficiency does not exceed 32 dB and no single deficiency exceeds 8 dB.
- The highest contour position that satisfies both rules is the STC rating.
- Use the "Lookup Table" tab to find minimum STC requirements for your building and separation type.
- Compare your calculated STC to the required minimum to confirm compliance.
Use cases
- Rate a wall assembly from lab or field transmission loss measurements.
- Check whether a proposed partition meets IBC or local building code STC minimums.
- Compare two wall assemblies by their STC ratings before construction.
- Design hotel, apartment, or office partitions for occupant privacy.
- Evaluate home theater or recording studio isolation walls.
- Verify compliance with OSHA occupational noise limits between spaces.
- Select the right wall system from manufacturer STC data sheets.
- Educate architecture and engineering students on the ASTM E413 procedure.
