What is the action-safe area?

The action-safe area is the inner 90% of the frame (width and height) where important motion and subject matter should remain. Content outside this zone may be cut off on older CRT televisions.

What is the title-safe area?

The title-safe area is the inner 80% of the frame. Text, logos, and captions must stay inside this boundary to remain readable across all display types, including sets with overscan.

EBU R95 is a European Broadcasting Union recommendation that defines safe areas as 93% (action) and 88% (title) of the frame, slightly larger than the traditional 90%/80% standard used in North America.

Do modern displays still need safe areas?

Modern flat-panel TVs and streaming platforms show the full frame, but broadcast deliverables and digital signage still specify safe-area compliance. Following the guidelines also improves readability on mobile and small screens.

Can I use custom percentages?

Yes. Select the Custom preset and enter any action-safe and title-safe percentages from 50% to 100%. This is useful for platforms with non-standard inset requirements such as phone notch zones.
