What is bleed in print design?

Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the trim edge of your printed piece. It compensates for slight cutting variation so there are no white edges on the finished print. Standard bleed is 0.125 in (3 mm) on each side.

What is the safe zone?

The safe zone (also called the live area) is the region inside the trim edge where important content — text, logos, key images — should stay. Keeping content at least 0.125 in (3 mm) inside the trim edge prevents it from being cut off.

What bleed amount should I use?

Most North American printers require 0.125 in (1/8 inch) bleed. European printers typically specify 3 mm. Check your print vendor's requirements — some large-format or specialty printers request more.

How is the total artwork size calculated?

Artwork width = trim width + (2 × bleed). Artwork height = trim height + (2 × bleed). Bleed is added to all four sides, so it is doubled for each dimension.
