Summary
Enter case counts and population size to calculate point or period prevalence with 95% confidence intervals.
How it works
- Select the prevalence type: Point Prevalence (snapshot in time) or Period Prevalence (over a defined period).
- Enter the number of existing cases (all affected individuals at the time of measurement).
- Enter the total population size being studied.
- Choose the output multiplier: proportion, per 1,000, or per 100,000.
- The calculator divides cases by population, multiplies by the chosen scale, and computes exact Wilson score 95% confidence intervals.
- Results include the prevalence estimate, confidence interval, and a plain-language interpretation.
Use cases
- Cross-sectional survey analysis for chronic disease burden.
- Public health surveillance reports and dashboards.
- Estimating the prevalence of mental health conditions in a community.
- Calculating period prevalence from registry data over a study year.
- Grant proposals requiring epidemiological justification.
- Teaching students the distinction between prevalence and incidence.
- Health-needs assessments for resource allocation.
