M4V to MP4 Converter

Learn how to convert M4V files to MP4 using HandBrake, VLC, or FFmpeg — free, no upload required.

M4V vs MP4 — What is the Difference?

Feature M4V MP4
Container standard Apple variant of MPEG-4 ISO/IEC MPEG-4 Part 14
Video codec (typical) H.264 (AVC) H.264, H.265, AV1, VP9
Audio codec (typical) AAC, AC-3 AAC, MP3, Opus, AC-3
DRM support Optional (Apple FairPlay) None in container
Device compatibility Apple devices; limited elsewhere Universal — all platforms
File extension .m4v .mp4

DRM-protected files cannot be converted

M4V files purchased from iTunes and protected by Apple FairPlay DRM will fail or produce a blank video. The methods below work only for DRM-free M4V files — personal screen recordings, unlocked downloads, or files you created yourself.

Conversion Methods

HandBrake is the easiest free GUI option. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. 1

    Download HandBrake

Get the installer from handbrake.fr — it is free and open source.

  2. 2

    Open your M4V file

Click Open Source and browse to your .m4v file. HandBrake scans it and loads the title list.

  3. 3

    Choose a preset

Select Fast 1080p30 (or the matching resolution) from the preset list on the right. The container is already set to MP4.

  4. 4

    Set the destination

Under Save As, pick a folder and confirm the filename ends in .mp4.

  5. 5

    Click Start Encode

Progress shows in the bottom bar. A typical 1-hour 1080p file encodes in 5–15 minutes depending on your CPU.

Quality tip

For near-lossless results, switch from a speed preset to H.264 encoder with RF (Constant Quality) set to 18–22. Lower numbers = better quality, larger file.

Which Tool Should You Use?

HandBrake

Best for beginners. Quality presets, chapter markers, subtitle support, and a built-in preview. Ideal for one-off conversions on desktop.

VLC

Good if VLC is already installed. No additional download needed. Less control over quality than HandBrake but quick for simple tasks.

FFmpeg

Best for bulk jobs, automation, and scripts. Fastest remux speed. Requires comfort with the command line but offers the most control.
