What is knitting gauge?

Gauge (also called tension) is the number of stitches and rows that fit in a given measurement, usually 10 cm × 10 cm. It depends on your yarn, needle size, and personal knitting style.

Why is gauge important?

If your gauge differs from the pattern, your finished piece will be the wrong size. A swatch difference of even one stitch per 10 cm can change a garment by several centimeters across the chest.

How do I measure my swatch gauge?

Lay the swatch flat without stretching it. Place a ruler horizontally and count every stitch (V shape) in a 10 cm span. Repeat vertically for row gauge. Count at least twice in different areas and average the results.

Should I go up or down a needle size?
